Digital Scrap Quilt
Inspired by the non-functional top-only quilts by Rosie Lee Tompkins, I created a scrap quilt using fragments of African American art. The destruction of the work speaks to the erasure and partiality of African American Art in America. It is also meant to mimic the American Flag and principals of cultural blending. All three artists represented in this piece (Glenn Ligon, Alma Thomas, and Sam Gilliam) have shared perspectives on African American Art. Here we merge those voices as one, both stripping them of their individuality and highlighting it at the same time. This quilt is meant as both a satirical response to American cultural assimilation as well as a warm homage to African American quilting practices. This piece was created purely for educational non-commercial purposes.
